Newborns Confuse Day and Night

An interesting fact about babies is that newborns cannot distinguish between day and night. Your baby has just come from the cozy environment of the womb, where, honestly, there were more important things to focus on! In fact, the internal mechanisms that help your baby tell day from night only begin to develop around 2 months of age. During the first months, your baby’s main needs revolve around sleeping and feeding. At this early stage, the time of day has very little influence on your baby’s sleep cycles or internal clock — so don’t be surprised if you suddenly find yourself looking for breakfast at 4 a.m.!

A Baby’s Sleep Cycle Is Different from an Adult’s

A newborn’s sleep cycle lasts about 40 minutes, while an adult’s lasts around 90 minutes. Adults typically experience 4–6 sleep cycles per night with 4 different sleep stages, whereas babies only have 2 sleep stages.

Babies transition about every 40 minutes from light sleep (REM) to deep sleep (NREM). During the light sleep stage, babies wake more easily and may need help falling back asleep — at least until they learn how to connect their sleep cycles independently.

Dreamer Tip: Watch for signs that your baby is entering deep sleep. If you are holding your baby, this is often a good time to successfully place them into the crib or bassinet.

Babies Learn and Grow While Sleeping

From the moment your baby enters the world, there is an incredible amount to process. While babies sleep, their brains not only grow but also process everything they have already experienced. It can feel like a special moment when your baby suddenly seems to have “grown” after a nap.

Babies experience a stage of light sleep known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement). This stage is believed to support brain development by preventing the brain from fully shutting down. During this phase, blood flow to the brain increases, and certain nerve proteins are produced that stimulate brain activity.

Baby Sleep Develops Over Time

With the help of bedtime routines, your baby’s sleep can quickly evolve. Around 3 months of age, sleep stages expand from 2 to 3, and by around 6 months, your baby becomes capable of linking short sleep cycles together.

Helping your baby learn to fall asleep independently — using a method that works for your family — is an important step in developing healthy sleep habits.

Bedtime Routines & Rhythms

Bedtime routines can give your baby helpful signals about what to expect each day. Even though it takes time for a routine to become established, repetition and consistency help your baby recognize patterns.

Sleep routines can be simple, but when practiced regularly and in the same order, they can create an effective daily rhythm and contribute to more reliable sleep. They also help strengthen your baby’s circadian rhythm, ease sleep regressions, and reduce the long-term need for sleep aids or soothing methods.

Dreamer Tip: Remember that there will be days when the routine does not work. That is completely normal and does not set you back — sometimes you simply need to follow your baby’s rhythm.

Sleep Regression Is Normal

Just when you feel you have established a working sleep routine, everything may suddenly change. Sleep regressions are often also called “sleep developments” because they are usually connected to developmental milestones, though they can also be triggered by illness, lifestyle changes, or travel.

Typical signs include:

More frequent waking during the night
Increased fussiness
Resistance to naps and difficulty falling asleep

Understanding that sleep regressions are a completely normal part of development can help reduce frustration. Try to stick to your routine as much as possible (or begin one if you do not yet have one).

Common periods during the first year include:

4 months
6 months
8–10 months
12 months

Dreamer Tip: It can help to prepare in advance — for example, by cooking meals ahead of time, organizing support, or mentally preparing for interrupted sleep. Everyday life will settle again soon — hang in there!

Sleep Deprivation Is Challenging

Babies and sleep deprivation often go hand in hand. While everyone has experienced lack of sleep at some point, caring for a baby around the clock can be especially exhausting.

Sleep deprivation can lead to mood swings, memory problems, feelings of overwhelm, and difficulty coping with daily life. If you or your partner are struggling, seek support from your doctor, family, or friends.

Postnatal Depression Can Affect Anyone

Whether or not you have experienced depression before, postnatal depression can affect anyone. Hormonal changes after birth can cause strong mood swings and deep exhaustion.

You may find that the reality of life with your baby does not match your expectations, or you may face challenges with feeding or daily routines. No matter how you feel, seek support.

The changes after childbirth can be emotionally and physically intense. If you or your partner feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to ask for help — talk to your doctor, family, or friends.
